Hanoi Says Raid Killed Russ Sailor
TOKYO (AP) --A Soviet seaman was killed and another wounded by U.S. air strikes against Quang Ninh Province north of North Vietnam's major port of Haiphong Friday, the Communist Vietnam News Agency reported.
NVA identified the killed as Y. Dotov, boatswain of the Soviet freighter Grisha Akopyan, and the wounded as Captain N. Pokhov. Dotov's wife and two children live in Vladivostok, it added.
VNA said U.S. aircraft attacked Hong Gai, capital of the province, and other parts including the Ha Tu mine, the Cua Ong harbor and the Cai Chaq seaside resort form 5 to 5:45 p.m. Friday.
VNA said heavy property damage and casualties were caused to the local population.
"Equally serious," said VNA, "was an attack launched at 5:12 p.m. on the Soviet ship Grisha Akopyan." It said a bomb hit the starboard, tearing a hole of 7 by 4 meters in the officer's cabin and another bomb destroyed the navigating bridge.
VNA in another dispatch said four crewmen of the Soviet freighter Pevek who were injured by U.S. air raids near Haiphong last Tuesday are receiving medical treatment in Hanoi.
VNA meanwhile said "dozens" of U.S. aircraft also raided areas in Nam Ha province Friday noon, killing or wounding "dozens" of persons, mostly the aged and children, and destroying houses.
