Lon Nol Files For Presidency
PHNOM PENH (UPI) --President Lon Nol Tuesday filed his formal application for candidacy in the June 4 Cambodian presidential election.
His application was closely followed by that of In Tam, the former interior minister who has often been at loggerheads with the president and now is considered his most important opponent.
The deadline for declaration of candidacy was midnight Tuesday.
Keo An, former dean of the faculty of law whose dismissal last March sparked a lengthy student strike, filed his candidacy earlier and announced a platform including the return of exiled Prince Norodom Sihanouk to Cambodia as an ordinary citizen.
Other declared candidates are Sim Var, Cambodia's ambassador to Japan, and an obscure army colonel Huy Mong.
Lon Nol, 58, who was disabled by a crippling stroke more than a year ago, declared himself president last March in the midst of a government crisis and has since ruled by decree.
The Interior Ministry will review all applications for candidacy and announce the eligible candidates May 18.
On the military scene, the high command reported relative calm throughout the country Tuesday.
