Westy: Army Did Its Job

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (UPI) --Army Chief of Staff William C. Westmoreland asserted Saturday that the Army had achieved success in Vietnam by preventing a Communist victory there.

Westmoreland, addressing the 50th annual convention of the Reserve Officers Association, said, "In Vietnam, the Army's mission has been virtually accomplished. Our nation's objective in Vietnam was not to achieve a military victory in the classic sense. The military was never told to achieve a military victory.

"But what the Army was directed to do was done and done well," he said.
