Reds Hit Svay Rieng, Surrounding Villages
PHNOM PENH (AP) --The provincial capital of Svay Rieng in southeastern Cambodia and several surrounding villages came under Communist attack Saturday and the commanding general described the situation at Svay Rieng as still "very serious."
Brig. Gen. Sray Meas said he wants to open Highway One to Svay Rieng and the South Vietnamese border as soon as possible.
But the general added it would probably be several days before thousands of Khmer troops massed on the highway would be ready for the assault.
The high command spokesman said so far more than 500 soldiers, mostly from the captured town of Kompong Trabek, have reached safety with 175 women and children.
A Cambodian officer at the most forward position on the highway said a Khmer battalion overrun at the village of Prey Poun had trekked across 16 miles of swamp and rice paddies to reach Khmer lines.
