Reds Fight Off Laotian Attack
VIENTIANE (AP) --North Vietnamese forces turned back two government columns attempting to recapture the provincial capital of Khong Sedone in southern Laos over the weekend, informed sources said Monday.
One Laotian force of three battalions attacking from the west advanced Friday night to within 60 yards of a North Vietnamese command post on the crest of Phou Khong, three miles northwest of Khong Sedone, but was unable to force the North Vietnamese out of their bunkers.
Laotian T28 fighter-bombers saturated North Vietnamese bunkers all day Saturday, but the well dug-in Communists held their ground, the sources said.
The Laotions (sic) stormed North Vietnamese positions three times Sunday, but heavy fire drove them back each time, the sources added.
Despite the heavy fighting, government casualties, including two wounded company commanders, were termed light.
